Known as the Lucknow of Rajasthan, Tonk, about 97 km
south of Jaipur, is known for its old havelis and mosques. Founded by Nawab
Muhammad Amir Khan in the 17th century, Tonk is known by many names like
Lucknow of Rajasthan, Adab ka Gulshan (Rose garden of Etiquettes) and Meethe
Kharboojo ka Chaman (garden of sweet watermelons).
The town is one of the most interesting places in
Rajasthan with many Mughal architectural wonders like Sunehri Kothi and Jama
Masjid. Situated on the banks of the Banas River, the princely state was part
of Jaipur.
Maan Singh, the then King of Jaipur took over Tari and
Tonkra Janpad from Akbar and 12 villages of Tonkra Janpad villages were given
to Bhola Brahmin in 1643. The 12 villages were later named Tonk by Bhola
Brahmin.
Nawab Amir Khan, who led Pindaris along with the Maratha
army, agreed to disband his army and work with the British in return for the
right to rule Tonk.
Amir Khan’s grandson is credited with the building of
most of the architectural monuments in Tonk. Sunehri Kothi or the Mansion of
Gold and Jama Masjid stands out.
