About Tonk

Known as the Lucknow of Rajasthan, Tonk, about 97 km south of Jaipur, is known for its old havelis and mosques. Founded by Nawab Muhammad Amir Khan in the 17th century, Tonk is known by many names like Lucknow of Rajasthan, Adab ka Gulshan (Rose garden of Etiquettes) and Meethe Kharboojo ka Chaman (garden of sweet watermelons).
The town is one of the most interesting places in Rajasthan with many Mughal architectural wonders like Sunehri Kothi and Jama Masjid. Situated on the banks of the Banas River, the princely state was part of Jaipur.
Maan Singh, the then King of Jaipur took over Tari and Tonkra Janpad from Akbar and 12 villages of Tonkra Janpad villages were given to Bhola Brahmin in 1643. The 12 villages were later named Tonk by Bhola Brahmin.
Nawab Amir Khan, who led Pindaris along with the Maratha army, agreed to disband his army and work with the British in return for the right to rule Tonk.
Amir Khan’s grandson is credited with the building of most of the architectural monuments in Tonk. Sunehri Kothi or the Mansion of Gold and Jama Masjid stands out.
